Found Forest Floor
A short while ago, Found Forest Floor came out. It's a collaboration between myself and Erik Blagsvedt, and I'm very proud of it. It's about 250 pages of my artwork combined with Erik's poetry. The photos posted below are from my now slightly battered but well loved personal copy.
As an object, the book itself is really satisfying. As a read, I think most people who've already bought it have been dipping in and out, which is fine, but I strongly recommend reading it in longer bursts, as it has a strange, cumulative effect.
Full details can be found on my Intercorstal site here: https://intercorstal.com/found-forest-floor/
You can buy it from Createspace here (which I'd recommend for non-UK buyers): https://www.c4reatespace.com/734819
I'm doing a deal where you can buy direct from me and I'll draw on the inside page and include a page of artwork from the book, but postage costs make it a bit more expensive for anyone outside the UK. You can get that here: grthink.bigcartel.com

Mark Staff Brandl: Abstract Comics in Art History Class
Hi to Andrei and the group. Today I showed abstract comics, mostly from the anthology, but also the blog, to one of my Swiss art history classes (the Adult Foundation Course). It went great! I thought you might like to know. Mark

Wolf's Blood - Free PDF
UPDATE: As part of the continuation of this project, I've taken the links down for the time being. If you're particularly keen, email me at gareth@grthink.com
Hi all,
I've made the latest instance of Forestry Commission available to download. It's different frfom the others in a few ways, most notably it uses colour throughout and has text boxes, although still resolutely no narrative.
Download from here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4SfW4B59VgnYnBfTy1XSFhRYWc/view

Further to my previous post about 'Sugar Forest Fire', I've reworked that comic twice more - once into 'Rabbit On The Stairs', and then again into 'A Salted Wound'. Both are available to download from the following links:

Comics und Graphic Novels: Eine Einführung Baby
If you read German, there’s a recently released textbook, Comics und Graphic Novels: Eine Einführung by Julia Abel and Christian Klein (Publisher: J.B. Metzler. ISBN: 978-3-476-02553-1), that has a bit about abstract comics in one chapter on medium, form and narrative - “Was ist ein Comic?” :
The original color version of my piece used in the book can be seen here:

Sugar Forest Fire - free download
UPDATE: As part of the continuation of this project, I've taken the links down for the time being. If you're particularly keen, email me at gareth@grthink.com
Over the past few months I've been working on a graphic novel called 'Found Forest Floor'. From that, I took a sample of pages to make a mini-comic/zine called 'Found Forest', which I've been working over with inks and paint to make something new, which is called 'Sugar Forest Fire'. I've made the PDF available for download here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4SfW4B59VgnTUwwUzNNNkRqQms/view
I'm planning to continue this process over the coming month, continuously redeveloping the original pages, just to see what happens, really.

Jean Caillon - le moment de tuer
Hello everyone,
just a short note to show show you an image an old (1972) "proto-abstract comic" (for lack of a better word) Maël Rannou made me discover some time ago. Each page contains a unique image similar to this one:

Maël has published 2 thirds (EDIT: the third part is also available) of this 22 (EDIT: 28) pages book on its tumblr, the first part is here:
http://yesterdayiwasadog.tumblr.com/post/153825431976/jean-caillon-le-moment-de-tuer-première-partie
Despite an unfortunate twist in its last page, which renders the story much more down to earth, I still find it a very interesting example of early (almost) abstract comics.
But actually I feel a bit awkward talking about it myself, since Maël knows this work and this author much better than I do, and since he moreover regularly emails me with other such examples, I think it would be a better idea to simply invite him to contribute to this blog. (Maël is also a small press publisher and did produce some zines of its own.)

Creative AI and Abstract Comics
Finished a project titled "42" that mixes abstraction, narrative and some representational imagery. It applies creative artificial intelligence (machine learning) in the form of style transfer to build many of the layered collages that form the backbone of the panels. I also used glitch video, abstract photography and traditional ink drawings as inputs into the process. There is even a well hidden 3D fractal. The work narrates a meeting of two individuals in 42 panels, counting down to the meaning of life, the universe and everything.
A few non representational panels below, you can see the full project here.
