978 (neuf sept huit) de Pascal Matthey

Today, in a bookshop, I found a strange 48cc comic book :
978 cover, Pascal Matthey, 5c
What's ? So, I looked inside : it's a kind of abstract comics ; like a mix of figuration libre and american abstract expressionism.
978 (excerpt), Pascal Matthey, 5c, 2013
978 (it's the first digits of books bar code), it's also a comic book de l'après surproduction (de bandes-dessinées).

Pascal Matthey's 978 is published by la Cinquième Couche.  (more excerpts and a short introduction (in French) here.

ps : 48cc (48 pages couleur cartonné) is a term (of Jean-Christophe Menu) to denote the french standard commercial comic books.

Playboy Centerfold

The shallow depth of field of the photo creates some interesting abstraction. I turned three pages from this pictorial into comics.

Four Colours 5

This one has really grown on me. Inspired by my Abstract Series 3 comics. I like the effect of the black gutter/panels laid over the other colours.

Four Colours 1

First in a series. I used a four colour ball point pen, I love the immediacy and lightness of it.

Short Video interview with Brandl about Molotiu Panel at CAA, from Columbia College Blog by Barbara Trinh

Barbara Trinh says, "While I’m sitting waiting for a session to begin, my curiosity was sparked when a man in front of me was enthusiastically speaking about comics and his art on the T-shirt he was currently wearing. Instead of handing someone an ordinary business card, he hands them a button with his contact info on the back. That is because Mark Staff Brandl (http://www.markstaffbrandl.com/) is no ordinary artist. He is interested in comic/ sequential art, painting, and art history. His installations are described as ‘walk in comic books’, a mixture of installation and comic books that are 12 ft tall. In the video, Mark tells us about himself and his experience at CAA."

Brandl: "Meta-Dailies: Fortsetzung"

From 2001. I was analyzing the structuring of typical "dailies" --- daily newspaper comic strips --- and creating abstract variations on that. I was also including the so-called ancillary elements of titles, names, the copyright notice, "to be continued tomorrow" captions and so on. What I enjoyed most was the combination of abstract images with the conventional accoutrements.

Brandl: Sorta Abstract

This is a link to larger images from my last, 50-foot (15 meter) long, 12-foot (3.5 meter) high comic "installation." It is not abstract, yet is non-narrative, thus abstract in one of Andre's senses. My Metaphor(m): Meninas

Wandering Story

Hi everyone, I've been working on this piece over the course of a month. It was something I would keep to the side of my computer and work on for 10-20 minutes at a time as a break from other work. Many of you are familiar with my previous work on Stray Thoughts, and this is part of a conscious effort to keep the spur of the moment nature in my work.

Enjoy!

Abstract Comic in Mainstream Marvel Monthly!

Recently while going through recently purchased comics I got around to reading Marvel's Strange Tales #3. For those that are unaware this was a limited series where non-superhero and small press comic artists can do fun quirky short stories involving Marvel characters.

Well, in the final issue there is what I would consider an abstract comic featuring the Red Skull!. It is titled Sue Nami Cupcake and is by Liquid Fury artist Chris Chua.

I found this work to be very interesting and relevant to what we talk about on this sight.

I would have loved to share the actual work with you but I didn't want to violate anyone's copyright.

I recommend you all try to see this strip, I would love to discuss it within' the context of abstract comics.

As far as I know this is the most mainstream place this kind of work has been published.

Abstract Comics from New Zealand part 1

A while ago I put a call out to the New Zealand comics community to see if anyone had made any Abstract Comics recently. I only got a couple of responses, here is one of them:
By Isaac Freeman

first published in Funtime Comics #23: The Walls of Halls

Statement by Isaac:
Very occasionally I try to do a comic with a specific formal agenda. In this case the objective was to produce something that was completely abstract but also definitely sequential, and to do it entirely by hand. The production involved tracing repeatedly from a master pencilled panel, which I reworked between each frame. While I met the technical requirements I set for myself, I don't think it's particularly interesting as a comic, because the transitions between panels are very rigid and simple. It could just as well be a series of stills from an animation.

Issac is the current editor of the long running New Zealand anthology Funtime Comics.

Personally I like it.

Brandl: Art Museum of Canton Thurgau Paintings Acquisition

It is a particular thrill for me to announce that the Art Museum of Thurgau in Switzerland has just acquired 20 paintings of mine! They comprise a representative cross-section of several years of my series titled "Covers," the majority of which fit into the "abstract comics" realm, much like my installation in the Silent Pictures exhibition. I am very pleased that they will be in such a great institution and under the care of its eminent director Markus Landert and curator Dorothee Messmer!
